Why go Steel?

Good match with Solar:

Bur Oak recommends roofing products under rooftop solar systems that have a similar expected lifespan to the solar modules that are installed on it.  This saves you the future cost of removing your system for re-roofing.

The special Energy Star certified coating on this ABC steel compliments solar installations.  HOW?  Well the intention and purpose of the Energy Star coating is to reduce summer air conditioning loads by reflecting the heat of the sun rather than absorbing it.  This reduces the attic internal temperature, and therefore less heat is transmitted into your home.

The side effect is that rooftop temperature is lower than with standard roofing products like asphalt shingles or standard steel products.  Lower rooftop temperatures equals lower solar module temperatures and therefor a more efficient and productive system.  Think about putting your hand on the hood of a black car in the summer sun.

Environmentally Friendly Choice:

We also recommend steel due to the lesser environmental impact of using this product.  Not only will it make your home more energy efficient in the summer, this product also has the following environmental benefits:

  • Steel roofing weighs about 1/4 of asphalt shingles.  This means 1/4 the transportation costs and fuel burned to get the material to site.
  • Steel can last up to 3 times as long as asphalt shingles so this now equates to 1/12th the transportation costs.
  • Steel roofing is 100% recyclable when it does finally reach the end of it's life.  Asphalt shingles will go straight to the landfill.  There is no real cost effective recycling method.  So they will sit and leach toxins into groundwater for 100s of years.
  • Over the course of the life of asphalt shingles they leach a steady stream of pollutants into the rainwater that runs off your roof.  Steel roofing is virtually inert in comparison
